Periodontitis is not a matter of fate

Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and heart attacks if left untreated

Inflammation of the gums, bleeding gums, and loose teeth: The cause of these symptoms is often periodontitis. If this disease is not treated, it will result in tooth loss. But there are effective, painless treatments for effectively containing the negative effects of periodontitis.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gums and jawbone. The cause of this inflammation of the dental structures is bacterial plaque, which causes pockets in the gum tissue. A first indication of periodontitis is bleeding gums. Periodontitis is a widespread disease, much like caries: 80 percent of adults are affected.

How is periodontitis treated?

First, a periodontal screening is performed to draw a conclusion about the severity of the periodontitis. Whether teeth can be saved or must be removed is checked here. As part of the periodontitis therapy, tooth surfaces and gums are thoroughly cleaned –  using manual instruments, ultrasound, and lasers. For deep pockets, the gums are cut open in order to treat the infected sites. This treatment is carried out under local anesthetic.

Soft laser for treating periodontitis

Painless treatment of periodontitis with soft laser

The antimicrobial, photodynamic therapy (aPDT), known as soft laser therapy, is a modern, gentle, painless treatment method for periodontitis and perioimplantitis. It has no side effects whatsoever. To treat periodontitis with a soft laser, the gums and bone sockets are first professionally cleaned in order to reduce the bacterial count. A blue dye solution is then applied to the cleaned pockets in order to dye the bacteria. Finally, the damaging bacteria are permanently destroyed using laser light.

As a result, the inflammation fades quickly and the natural balance is restored. The treatment of periodontitis with a soft laser is painless and has no side effects whatsoever. In most cases, it is so successful that antibiotics and surgical measures are not needed.
